J-Term Advisory

Hi Everyone!!

I hope each of you had a wonderful winter break!!! I am excited to begin our Advisory Blog. You are such an intelligent and creative group that I know our discussions and posts will be lively!!!

For our first week of Posting this is what I need to see:

1. Copy and paste either the link or an entire new article on our page. Summarize the article and tell us why you think this is important news. Finally, give your opinion on what the article discusses. So you do NOT want to pick a lame article about traffic or something. You want to pick an article that will elicit discussion and various opinions.

2. Post your Service, Educational, and Physical goals for J-Term. Remember, everyone must complete a service project this month. You can Knit, Crochet, or make something to be placed in a basket to raffel off for Children's Hospital

3. Post a picture you took over break. We are a family and we should show off pics we are proud of!!

4. Finally, post a quotation that moves you (either makes you angry or moves you to action). Tell who said the quote and finally explain why this quote stirred an emotional reaction in you.

Directions: Please Complete and post requirements 1-4 by Tuesday 1/10. Everyone must respond to 9 other students posts (3 for news article, 3 for picture, 3 for quote) by Thursday 1/12.

It is imperative that both your posts and responses be intelligent and thoughtful so that we can respond and learn from your responses. Simple, hurried, minimal responses will reflect poorly on your advisory grade for this term.

  1. http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/05/technology/digital_music_sales/index.htm

This article explains how for the first time, digital music sales topped the sales of physical music. People are just not buying CDs or “hard copies” of music anymore. We have passed from the age of vinyl through CDs and now onto buying all of our music through media sources like iTunes.

In some ways this is a good thing and in some ways it isn’t. Its good that we don’t have big CDs cluttering up our homes and cars anymore and we can carry several thousand songs on something we can fit in our pockets. But there is something truly satisfying about picking out a CD or putting a record on a turntable that the digital age of music lacks.

  2. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/protest-helps-half-court-shot-contest-winner-claim-153247431.html

This article explains why a college student might not get his winnings for a half-court shot made during halftime. The controversy was started by the company who was funding the 10,000 dollars, Kroger. The corporation believes that since he was allegedly across the half court line that he shouldn't receive the money. The Kentucky freshman says that there are some pictures that show his foot touching the line but some pictures showing him behind, either way it was never intended to cheat.

I believe that regardless of if he crossed or not, the measurement was not significant enough to change the outcome of the shot. The competition is not necessarily a skills competition but more of a student/fan based activity for the halftime show. Therefore i believe he should get paid, he preformed for the fans and they perceived it as a half-court shot.

  4. 1. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/world/middleeast/iran-imposes-death-sentence-on-alleged-us-spy.html?hp

This article very simply explains a situation in which an Iranian-American has been sentenced to death in Iran for accused espionage. This topic elicits important discussion because the outcome will determine the relationship between America and Iran. As someone who does not follow global political issues very often, I cannot give a sound opinion. However, I can say that America has been known, in the past, to go overboard with things like this, in which they have no problem placing blame and hatred on foreign countries. However, I also know that Iran are sometimes known to play dirty, so as I said, I really am not sure what to think.

    2. Service: Approximately 8 hours of volunteer work at COSI.
Educational: Obtain a minimum of a B in Calculus 153.
Physical: Work myself back up to be able to run 8-10 miles a day, minimum.

Me and my family went to Texas for Christmas break, and we did some archery there; only posted this because apparently it's the only picture of me that anyone got haha.

    4. "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." ~Mark Twain

Most of my favorite quotes come from Mark Twain, he is one of m favorite authors. He's able to put a lot of what we think and feel into words. With this quote, it kind of just makes me re-evaluate the human race, and therefore kind of encourages me to be a better person when I remember it.

  5. Article:
This article was focused on how giving oxytocin to a monkey can change the monkey’s social mindset. Duke University has researchers studying the effectiveness of oxytocin when given to a monkey. The head researcher (Platt) suggested that oxytocin is breaking down normal social barriers. I thought this article was interesting and I would like to hear some comments you guys have on this article. This article is very short and it would take no time to read it. So if you want to know more about the article, just look it over. Here is the website: http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/20120005194036data_trunc_sys.shtml

    Goals:
Service goal: I will be knitting a scarf. I haven’t yet decided if I am going to try a new pattern or not but I like knitting and I hope you guys did too. I have chosen to knit a scarf so I can put it in the basket for the Children’s hospital raffle. Besides from this I am also trying to volunteer at a dog shelter every weekend. I love animals and I took a class to where I am now a registered volunteer at this dog shelter. It’s a lot of fun and I enjoy the people there.
Educational goal: My goal is to not fall behind. I am taking Government this J-Term, but I also have an independent study for Chemistry I am working on. Also this J-Term, my Spanish Teacher has emailed her students assignments they need to do before Spanish 2 comes along next semester. So my goal is to complete all of my assignments but most of all NOT fall behind in Government!
Physical goal: My Physical goal is to go on this 7-day diet with my family starting this Sunday. This diet is supposed to help us lose about 10 pounds. I have instructions on the 7-day diet, if anyone wants to try it. If you want to try the diet, just let me know and I will send you the instructions via. Email! If not, I will just keep you posted on how I like it.

  6. Quotation:
“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
    Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
    By: William W. Purkey
I liked this quote because in my opinion it says it all. It states what life should be about. “You gotta dance like nobody is watching” that to me is like saying just be yourself because even if you don’t have confidence, you are still yourself and just love that fact. “Love like you’ll never be hurt” in my opinion is saying put yourself out there because sometimes it will be worth it and other times it wont. But how do you know until you try? “Sing like there’s nobody listening” is like saying its okay to be yourself because people love you for who you are. “And live like it’s heaven on earth” is like saying live life to the fullest. That’s my opinion on the quote. I would love to hear what you guys have to say about it, so comment! : )

    Winter Break = AMAZING
This winter break I was soaking up the sun! This winter I left on December 18th and headed for Florida. But before I got to Florida, I made a few stops on the way. The first stop was Memphis Tennessee. In Memphis, my family went and saw Elvis Presley’s home. Not only did we take a tour through his home but we also went through his plane (Lisa Maria), and we saw every single car he has ever owned. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. If you are an Elvis fan, I definitely recommend going there and taking the tours. After Memphis we hit the road again. We made our second stop, which was New Orleans. In New Orleans we did a lot of shopping and sight seeing. We went to the World War II museum. I’m not a history person or anything, but after going to this museum, I have sparked a little bit of an interest in this war. I recommend going to the museum without a doubt. After New Orleans we were headed to Florida. After a few days we were in Florida. The first thing we did when we went to Florida was swam with the manatees. That was awesome! Florida is where we spent the rest of the vacation. We were in Key West and yes the weather was amazing. 75 to 80 degree weather all of the second week! I did a lot of shopping in Key West and just sat out on the beach. It didn’t even fill like winter and boy did I love it. To end the trip, my grandpa surprised all of the grandkids with an experience of a lifetime. We did an all day excursion. We went jet skiing, para-sailing, and snorkeling. It was absolutely amazing. Jet skiing was the best out of all three. I didn’t like para-sailing because when they dipped you in the water, I felt as if I was drowning. I don’t think I will ever para-sail again, but it was good to try it at least once. Snorkeling freaked me out because there were so many jellyfish around me, I felt as if I were going to die. But I do recommend you try both of them! All I have to say is, I’m okay with not knowing what’s in the ocean! : ) that was my winter vacation. I hope to read what your guy’s vacation was like. Pictures will be posted shortly.

This is an article talking about how they are putting inferred cameras in cars so that at night a car can see a person walking when you cant. i thought this article was interesting because it shows how technology is making our world safer in many ways.

Goals: my goals for J-Term are to finish my english packets and pass the final and to pass math so that next semester i can take a new class.

  9. Response to Articles:

Lizzie: I read the article that you posted. I really liked reading it. I would have to agree with you on the technology helping the world. It's pretty cool to think about, if you ask me. I guess I'm just curious as to how someone comes up with something like that, you know? It's amazing. I hope this works well for our world, in years to come.

Anthony: I briefly through the article that you posted, and in all reality, it made me mad. Why wouldn't they give him his winnings. That's absolutely ridiculous. Why would a company say they would give him his winnings but after the plays all said and done the company tries to make up some crazy excuse as to why not to give it to him. It makes me want to think if it was a joke for the get go, you know?

Joey: Your article caught my attention. Just a few days ago my sister and I were making jokes about how lame we where to buy CD's, and actually have a CD player. After looking over this article I now feel bad for making jokes because I see how companies for music may be struggling. But I think it is pretty cool to see how fast our world is changing. I love music, but I love to have my music on an iPod not a CD. I liked this article and I showed it to my sister and from the looks of it, she liked the article too.

  10. J-TERM GOALS

Academic: For j-term I want to finish English and Algebra. To complete this goal I will try to finish all of my English packets and pass my final. For Algebra I will try to stay on top of my homework and pass my tests. Also, I will stay after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays to get some extra help, so that when it comes time to do the final it will be easier on me.

Health: Because it is getting colder, it is harder for me to go out and walk a few times a week. So for my health goal I will try to ride our stationary bike 2 times a week. I will also try to do yoga on one of the other days.

Service: For J-term I will work on our Children’s Hospital project. For my project I am creating a toy duck out of wood. My goal with this project is to create the duck, stain it and make it able to roll.
